Alabama ASCD

Summer 2018 Whole Child Award

Alabama ASCD named Oak Mountain Elementary School (PreK – 3) as the 2018 recipient of the Alabama ASCD Whole Child Award during the CLAS Summer Convention on June 10th in Mobile. The award recognizes schools that take innovative actions to meet the needs of the whole child by focusing on the ASCD whole child tenets: healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. The nomination highlighted how Oak Mountain Elementary School has intertwined the components of the Leader in Me program into the daily routines of their students as a means of encouraging them to take ownership of their own learning and actions. Themes, goals, and incentives tied to the school mascot, the bluebird, encourage students to do their bluebird best.  Student leadership teams like the PE Posse, Hallway Hosts, and Breakfast Buddies assist younger students in the school. Students take responsibility for the cleanliness and appearance of the school by working with their class family where they can earn a bluebird from the custodial and cafeteria staff.  This program has empowered the students of Oak Mountain Elementary School to not only help themselves but also each other to be safe and responsible while proudly saying, “Once a bluebird, always a bluebird!”
